This past Friday I took in a service that was really special. It wasn't the message that set it apart so much as it was those in attendance.
When I lived in Salt Lake City, one of the things that drove me nuts was fellow Christians who were unwilling to overlook what I considered rather trivial issues with Christians of other denominations. Sometimes it was a matter of worship: should instruments be used? or may women sing lead? Sometimes it was a deeper theological issue: once saved, always saved? or free will? Given the setting of being in the middle of Mormondom, I felt that there were much larger issues to be debated. My thoughts and feelings at the time are the same as they are now. That is, if we can't get along in a place like Salt Lake City, then we're never going to get along.
For Good Friday this year, seven churches in Laramie came together for a worship service. Each of the participating churches were given equal time to read one of the seven passages in the Gospels where Jesus speaks from the cross. Each passage was followed by a time of meditation, a prayer, and a hymn.
It was really special to take part in such an event; an event I imagine Heaven will be very much like.
